1977 album Bridges with Brian Jackson "Fermi Atomic Power Plant near Monroe, MI, in 1966" Scott-Heron's song "We Almost Lost Detroit", written about a previous accident at a nuclear power plant, was included in the No Nukes album of concert highlights. (We Almost Lost Detroit is the title of a book about the accident by John G. Fuller.) Included also is footage from Detroit Riots '67, the City of Detroit. Also, we never recovered from the riots...so there are photos of how Detroit looks now in some areas...Detroit is a Beautiful city...know it is hard to believe...great architect all over...and Good Hard Working people as well....and now since the recession we are so not doing good...the highest in Unemployment, Foreclosures and Crime...Detroit needs Healing, Prayer and Help! Gil Scott-Heron, Brian Jackson, and the Midnight Band take a slightly different approach with their 1977 effort, Bridges. With less of the gaping and world-infused sound prevalent on previous albums, the songs are more concise and Scott-Heron comes into his own as a singer depending less on his spoken word vocal style. This album may not be one of his better-known releases (the long out of print LP is slated to make it's CD debut in the fall of 2001), but the excellent songwriting exposes Scott-Heron at the height of his powers as a literary artist. The social, political, cultural, and historical themes are presented in a tight funk meets jazz meets blues meets rock sound that is buoyed by Jackson's ...

The world knows about the rich musical history of Detroit, Michigan, and the legendary artists it has produced, but what is it that makes The Motor City unique when it comes to Rock & Roll? Everyone knows the names Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, The MC5, The Stooges, The Romantics, Kid Rock, etc., but what made these acts so different, so special, so quintessentially "Detroit"? The Detroit music scene is a vibrant stew of musical influences, and when an act rises up from the trenches here to become known worldwide, they are taking those influences with them. The Detroit experience is unique because the bands here inspire and influence each other as much or more than they are influenced by the Rock & Roll standard-bearers of the world. For every kid in Detroit who was inspired by Led Zeppelin or Guns & Roses, there were dozens more whose heroes included bands like Adrenalin, Mugsy, Seduce, The Almighty Strut, Halloween, and more recently, The Shram Band, Overloaded, Pistol Day Parade, and so many others who are little-known outside of southeastern lower Michigan. Detroit Rocks is a documentary which will focus not on history, but on the influences that live and grow in the here and now, as they are passed from generation to generation of young up-and-coming musicians. This is not the story of this band or that band, it is the story of how players in Detroit were affected by the bands that they saw in their own hometown, and how these influences can be heard in the music being made ...

Drexciya - Dr Blowfins Experiment Taken from the EP, Uncharted (Somewhere In Detroit 1998) | CLASSIC | DREXCIYA | James Stinson & Gerald Donald (Drexciya)... Detroit Electro / Techno outfit Drexciya was conceived in 1989, but first came into the public eye in 1994 with 'Aquatic Invasion' - the first of a thematic series of releases. Drexciya's James Stinson and Gerald Donald remained hidden behind their alias for much of the group's existence, communicating a complex personal mythology of a 'Drexciyan' race of underwater dwellers descended from pregnant slave women thrown overboard during trans-Atlantic deportation. Within this fiction, their music - which they claimed was recorded "live in the studio" rather than programmed - was imagined as a "dimensional jumphole" between their black African roots and the contemporary USA. Sadly Stinson died suddenly on 3rd September 2002 of a heart condition. Donald continues to produce music under other names. (Edited) -Discogs. Drexciya were electronic musicians from Detroit, Michigan. The late James Stinson was the only officially identified member of Drexciya, but it was considered an open secret that he had a partner, Gerald Donald. The majority of Drexciya's releases were in the style of harsh, dancefloor oriented Electro, punctuated with elements of retro, 1980s Detroit Techno, with occasional excursions into the Ambient and Industrial genres. Tracks are mostly centered around the TR-808 drum machine, with bass, melodies, and ...

LINK: tinyurl.com Detroit-based the Reflections were a five-man group schooled in doo wop who scored in 1964 on Ed Wingate's Golden World label with "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet," written by Bob Hamilton and Freddie Gorman. (Gorman later wrote songs for Motown ("Please Mr. Postman" and "Forever") and formed the Originals, who hit with "Baby I'm for Real.") The Reflections were Phil Castrodale, Ray Steinberg, Tony Micale, Danny Bennie, and Johnny Dean. The group's first recording was a remake of the Five Satins' "In the Still of the Night" on Tigre, which did well in some Midwestern markets. Their Golden World debut, "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet," cracked the Top Ten before settling at the number six position. They recorded seven more 45s for Golden World, but none were as successful as "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet." "Like Columbus Did" cracked the pop 100, but only by four slots, hanging at number 96. "Poor Man's Son," the Reflections' sixth Golden World single, almost cracked the Top 40 but stopped climbing at number 55. Other singles -- "Talking About My Girl," "(I'm Just) A Henpecked Guy," "Shabby Little Hut," "Wheelin' and Dealin'," "Out of the Picture," and their final single, "Girl in the Candy Store" -- did nothing. Their producers insisted they use a hokey falsetto sound on their ...

The Lyons Country Store encourages our visitors to step back in time and explore a 1930 country store. It is one of the area's few exhibits that allows visitors to handle real, historic artifacts once found in general stores nearly a century ago. In our Country Store you can see how an old-fashioned cash register worked, listen to period music on a Victrola-like speaker, play a game of checkers on an old checkr board set atop a barrel, and see old toys and games that children enjoyed decades ago. The store is a tribute to Bob Lyons, an avid collector of historic memorabilia and a founder of the Museum back in 1982. Mr. Lyons discusses some of his favorite artifacts in the store, illuminating how life was a bit different many years ago.
Andy here with ProGuitarShop.com, jamming on the Fender Artist Series Wayne Kramer Stratocaster, a unique instrument modeled after the same Strat Wayne used in his days with the 60's Detroit punk pioneers, The MC5. The tattered starred and striped finish on the alder body immediately sets this guitar apart from the pack and the commemorative neck plate lets you 'kill hate' whenever you plug it in. The tones from the Fender Wayne Kramer Signature Strat aren't exactly your standard fare either, with a fat Seymour Duncan '59 humbucker in between two vintage styled single coils, and a hardtail bridge for extra sustain. The Fender Wayne Kramer Signature Strat's neck goes the vintage route with a meaty "C" shape, 21 vintage frets and a 7 ¼" rosewood fingerboard. proguitarshop.com

LINK: tinyurl.com Jackie "Sonny" Wilson was born in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in Highland Park, the only son of Jack and Eliza Mae Wilson from Columbus, Mississippi. His father was an alcoholic and constantly unemployed, and his mother, who had lost two earlier children, doted on Wilson and became a powerful influence in his life. He began to sing at an early age, and even formed a quartet, The Ever Ready Gospel Singers Group, which earned a small measure of fame among the local churches. Wilson was a habitual truant, getting in and out of trouble on a regular basis. He began drinking at age nine, and in 1950 at age 16 dropped out of high school. He married Freda Hood, his childhood sweetheart, and a daughter arrived in March, 1951. At this time he was singing in local clubs with Levi Stubbs(later of The Four Tops fame). In 1953 he successfully auditioned for Billy Ward's Dominoes, replacing Clyde McPhatter when the latter left the group to form The Drifters. Their first release was "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down", followed by "Rags to Riches." In 1956 they had their first pop hit, "St. Therese Of The Roses." In 1957 Wilson embarked on a solo career. His manager was Al Green, a music publisher and manager who was already managing Della Reese, Johnnie Ray and La Vern Baker. Green was able to ...

Performing in May of 2009 at Movement - The Detroit Electronic Music Festival. As everyone always says: Sorry about the sound. I shot this with my Nikon D90 digital SLR camera held over my head. The built-in mic isn't exactly designed to be assaulted with a 50000 watt PA, so it's a bit distorted. He's just really fun to watch, so I stuck this up here. His set was the best thing about the DEMF. Super abrasive, super loud, and very unlike the low key tracks he produces.

When America was Great The 1890's early 1900's the true pinnacle of America as a nation The 1890's and early 1900's - until the advent of WWI was a period of exceptional economic expansion, and innovation, perhaps unparalleled .today. The American empire of trade was at its zenith, and cities were growing rapidly. While the same decade saw an explosion of immigration to the United States from less economically prosperous lands, it was a period of vast wealth. The railroads, the dominance of the United States in South American markets and the Caribbean meant that industries were doing very well.
